Is it noble to patent a Nobel winning research?

What do you think about this story? http://yalepatents.org/2009/10/07/nobel-chemistry-work-patented-by-yale-and-others/

Should a research that affects so many people that it has won Nobel prize be patented/controlled by a few?

They have patented the whole process. From my meager understanding this could affect a large number of possible drugs. This seems fundamentally wrong to block other pharmaceutical companies from using this to develop potentially lifesaving meds. I can understand a specific compound being patented like TNT, but not a whole branch of possible drugs.
